Background[]
The real root of Turn Undead lies on exorcism as it is an act of expelling demons, usually exorcism refers to forcing an evil spirit out of an object of living being it can also be applied to fiend purging.[1] Turn Undead as a formal name is rather mysterious as the name became a staple of instantly banishing undeads. There are two of the possible explanations for its origin the first being how fiends were believed be repelled in presence of a holy item as they cannot withstand the divine, as the other was bury the dead facing the ground as preemptive measurement in case they raise from the depths.[2]
The approach used for the skill is the holy purge, present since the first iteration. Only later the halting capability, through the Malleus Maleficarum special interaction, was introduced as a allusion to unsuccessful exorcisms.
Tips and Strategies[]
- Turn Undead isn't affected by the character AoE attack ratio, only the skill level and Engkrateia buff can increase it.
- Aside the listed synergy with Inquisitor's Malleus Maleficarum, the class also has Judgment as a natural synergy, forcing enemies into demon race. Despite that, Judgment's and Turn Undead cooldowns have 25 seconds gap and different targeting mechanisms. It is recommended have Turn Undead at level 7 or higher, or level 4 with Engkrateia, to make the best use of this combo.
Trivia[]
- Turn Undead was originally a Paladin skill and was moved to Priest with Re:Build patch, however Exorcist was already released at time. It's believed that Turn Undead was moved to Priest to compensate the class low reliable offensive power and also can be linked to the theme through life energy cancellation. In Exorcist's case the subject is trickier. Considering the class was designed as a heavy magic damage class it would be expected for Turn Undead to outshadow other skills when it has the natural ability to instantly kill enemies from the assigned races, regardless of the user and enemy stats.
